Complications during Artificial Pneumothorax Therapy

cases without examining the patients radiographically, either before or after induction. Now that a great impetus is given to the problem of tuberculosis in this country there is every possibility of increasing the incidence of similar therapeutic adventures which are undoubtedly beset with positive danger. Hence a statistical study of the complications and dangers of pneumothorax therapy is justified at the present juncture. Woodcock (1915) wrote, ' there are dangers in connection with the production of artificial pneumothorax, but the greatest and about this there be no mistake is the neglect in which it is held \ In a series of three hundred patients on whom pneumothorax was attempted, the complications* that occurred during primary induction and subsequent course of treatment are given as follows :?

متن کاملSystemic air embolism following induction of artificial pneumothorax under anaesthesia, with successful management.
Systemic air embolism occurred in a patient during general anaesthesia, with positive pressure ventilation, following induction of artificial pneumothorax to assist in the diagnosis of a mediastinal mass. A sudden change in vital signs together with neurological abnormalities suggested involvement of both coronary and cerebral arteries. A trace of blood was noticed in the syringe which the surg...

Pneumothorax contralateral to the venous access site due to the right atrial lead is an uncommon complication. Concomitant steroid use is known as a risk factor of pacemaker lead perforation. We report a rare case of subacute contralateral pneumothorax due to a screw-in atrial lead perforation that occurred after dual-chamber pacemaker implantation in a patient who was receiving steroid therapy...

From its initial development by Carlo Forlanini at the end of the nineteenth century until the advent of antibiotics in the 1940s, artificial pneumothorax was one of the most widely used treatments for pulmonary tuberculosis. However, there were strongly held reservations about this therapy because of its risks and side effects. In the Soviet Union under Stalin, such uncertainties became instru...
متن کاملDISEASES OF THE CHEST Closed Intrapleural Pneumonolysis
In the early stages of his pioneering work with artificial pneumothorax, Forlanini realised that effective collapse of tuberculous lungs was frequently prevented by the presence of adhesions between the visceral and parietal pleurae. He stated that in time the adhesions would often stretch sufficiently to allow a satisfactory collapse, but it was soon found that in many cases cavities remained ...
